DYEING COTTON & OTHER PLANT BASED FIBERS with Stephanie Hagelberg-2.21
Learn to dye plant-based fibers using fiber reactive Procion MX dyes. There will be more than 50 colors of dye available to use! Students will do some tie-dyeing and use soda ash, also known as washing soda or sodium carbonate (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate). This class is limited to 4 participants, so bring your questions and curiosities. This is an opportunity for individual attention while learning from a master chemist. Stephanie has offered to repeat this class monthly as long as there is an interest. In summer months, when stinky dye pots can be set up outside, the class will focus on dyeing wool.
Materials Students must bring; Students can bring up to 3 items to dye.100% cotton PRE-WASHED t-shirts or fabric and/or yarn -100% cotton, linen or rayon yarn tied in dye skeins (see photo). Kitchen gloves and clothes ok for staining. Any questions, PLEASE ask in advance.
Stephanie Hagelberg grew up in rural Minnesota and was a child of 4-H where “learning by doing” was the 4-H slogan. She baked, sewed, grew flowers and vegetables, and trained an Appaloosa colt. She has degrees in both Chemistry and Spanish from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, she worked as a chemist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She loves the fiber arts and teaches classes in tie-dyeing, yarn dyeing, and knitting.
