DYEING COTTON AND OTHER PLANT BASED FIBERS with Stephanie Hagelberg

January 17, 2018
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Learn to dye plant-based fibers using fiber reactive Procion MX dyes. There will be more than 50 colors of dye available to use! We will do some tie-dying and use soda ash, also known as washing soda or sodium carbonate (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate). This is a time to learn from a master chemist.

Materials Students must bring: 100% cotton PRE-WASHED t-shirts and/or yarn to dye. The 100% cotton, linen or rayon yarn tied in dye skeins (see photo). Kitchen gloves and clothes ok for staining. Any questions, PLEASE ask in advance.

Stephanie Hagelberg grew up in rural Minnesota and was a child of 4-H where “learning by doing” was the 4-H slogan. She baked, sewed, grew flowers and vegetables, and trained an Appaloosa colt. She has degrees in both Chemistry and Spanish from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, she worked as a chemist at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
