Introduction to Punch Needle Rug Hooking - with Laura Salamy
Students will learn how to use the punch needle to make a small project of their own design (or one provided by the teacher) that can be hung on a wall or used to decorate a table-type surface. The basic skill set gained will allow students to move on to larger projects like rugs and pillows with confidence.
During the class, students will:
- transfer a pattern onto a monk’s cloth backing;
- prepare materials; and
- begin punching a mug rug, table “mat,” or wall-hanging.
We’ll discuss various ways you might want to finish your rug after all the hooking is done. No experience is necessary; just come prepared to play!
Laura is the fiber artist behind High on Hooking where she does “less than traditional” rug hooking and punch needle rug hooking. That is, despite her traditional techniques, the mats and rugs aren’t necessarily fashioned using only the wool strips and yarn one typically sees. She prefers to up-cycle her materials from old clothes and bedsheets. You can see her work on her website (www.HighonHooking.com) and in her Etsy shop (https://www.etsy.com/shop/HighonHooking).
In 2018, Laura was elected President of the Adobe Wool Arts Guild (AWAG), New Mexico’s only rug hooking guild.
