Our mission is to preserve and promote the rich textile heritage of Northern New Mexico by providing learning and teaching experiences for all ages and backgrounds, and by providing encouragement and training towards economic sustainability in the fiber arts.
The Española Valley Fiber Arts Center (EVFAC) is a unique
resource for fiber
artists and those who find beauty in the fiber arts. Visitors to the
adobe storefront in the historic district of Española, New Mexico enter
a world of looms, colorful yarns, beautiful handmade textiles, books,
and
supplies.
EVFAC was founded in 1995 by a small group of weavers who learned that there were many area families who had inherited looms but who had little knowledge of the heritage and techniques of Northern New Mexico textiles practiced by their grandparents. With donated looms and space in a local church, these weavers began to teach weaving. Thanks to a grant from the McCune Charitable Foundation, EVFAC rented a space, hired a manager, and opened its door for business in October 1996.
Today, the Center is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit membership organization with over 380 members and a staff of five. Our mission is to preserve and promote the rich textile heritage of Northern New Mexico by providing learning and teaching experiences for all ages and backgrounds, and by providing encouragement and training towards economic sustainability in the fiber arts.
If you stop by EVFAC, you may find busy students
learning to weave, spinners gathering for "Spinning Saturday", Pueblo
women purchasing materials for embroidery, a tapestry artist weaving
her latest creation, a
Hispanic weaver from the High Road searching for just the right color
of yarn, or children working on their backstrap looms. The Center is a
special place where people of all ages and backgrounds are brought
together by their interest in the fiber arts.
