Summer Update!

In late March, we hosted a warping party for several of the public school teachers who took part in our Rigid Heddle Teacher Training Program over the winter. The teachers warped more than 20 looms for their students at Pojoaque and James Rodriguez Elementary Schools!

We also have a special education teacher in Los Lunas - Kathy Schneider - who began weaving with two of her blind students. They picked it up instantly and are so excited to be able to weave this summer! 

Chimayó Weaving Yarn Co-op!

When the Clasgens mill in Richmond, Ohio shut down after 4 generations, it created serious concern for Rio Grande weavers, since the galleries in Chimayó rely on Clasgens yarn for all of their orders and inventory. The main challenge was finding a new mill willing to produce smaller minimum orders—most require at least 500 pounds per color. While we couldn't find a mill with a lower minimum, we were able to combine yarn orders from Centinela, Ortega’s, and Trujillos galleries in Chimayó. This allowed us to meet the minimum at a new mill in Michigan for basic colors and warp yarn.

The 2000 pounds of new yarn arrived this week, and the galleries are now getting restocked with the essential warp, natural, and black yarns, as well as light and dark grey. We currently have natural in stock in our shop for all of your dyeing experiments! For our next order, we'll work with a dye house in Pennsylvania to recreate some of the favorite colors that Clasgens used to make. Our goal is to set up a dependable co-operative system so the Chimayó galleries will have a sustainable way of purchasing yarn for the foreseeable future. A big thanks to Emily Trujillo for spearheading this initiative. 

Artist of the Month:

BONNIE BLISS

Bonnie Bliss (1948-2025) was an avid weaver for over 20 years, a member of Las Tejedoras Fiber Arts Guild, and a regular attendee at Convergence conferences. She fell in love with the Southwest in 1969 when she first visited with her husband Arthur, a native Santa Fean. After two careers, first in the grocery store business and then as a Montessori teacher of 3-5 year olds, Bonnie returned to Santa Fe with Arthur in 2015. She loved to travel, especially to locales with unusual natural beauty, as well as local crafts. She loved color, texture, and pattern. When weaving became too difficult she began needle felting, which she enjoyed immensely. 

Many thanks to the EVFAC for so kindly honoring her memory with this display.

We'd like to thank the family of Bonnie Bliss for honoring EVFAC with Bonnie's most prized crafts. Bonnie was a lovely friend who was quick to share her laughter and knowledge with us and she will be dearly missed.
