Advanced beginner to intermediate
rigid heddle weaving skills required:
Students must have prior experience
warping and weaving on a rigid heddle loom.
Krokbragd is a Norwegian word that translates to “crooked path.” Join Laura Ninnemann as she walks you through the colorful world of krokbragd weaving on a rigid heddle loom. This Scandinavian weaving technique has been used for centuries to create colorful, dense, and practical items such as window coverings, wall hangings, lap blankets, carriage throws, bags and coasters.
The weft-faced technique requires three picks for every pattern row, but don’t let that scare you! Although krokbragd is traditionally worked using medium-weight Scandinavian wool yarn, the pattern develops more quickly with the instructor’s preferred choice.
This fun and folksy weaving method will surely capture your curiosity and expand your skill set. Hands-on explorations in this 2 day workshop will include:
Creating supplemental sheds
Color choices
Pattern reading
Mastering selvedge control
Adding a foldable hem
Pattern drafting
Materials students must provide for class:
Rigid Heddle Loom:
Warped and ready to weave. Use 8/4 cotton carpet warp or equivalent, 2 yrds in length, and preferably separated using brown kraft paper.
EVFAC has Rigid Heddle Looms available for use during this class. You may contact Debbie info@nmfiberartscenter.org to arrange pick up. Please note: you must warp the loom on your own before the class.
Warp Sett: 37 ends total, 5 epi, 10 dent reed. Begin & end in a slot. Warp every other hole/slot if using a 10 dent reed.
Yarn: Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride worsted yarn in at least 3 colors: 1 dark, 1 light, and one high contrast to the other two. Test by twisting the colors together to see if they are all clearly defined when next to each other. You may use more colors if you wish. The amount will vary depending on how much you want to weave. And the more colors you choose, the less you will need of each.
Stick shuttles: 1 for each yarn color, 1 pick-up stick minimum 9” long; wooden weaving comb, table fork or similar for beating in weft. (Weaving tools are available from the center during class use, and tools are available in the EVFAC store for purchase as well)
Warp, weft, weaving tools, and Rigid Heddle Looms are available for purchase at the center. Please feel free to stop by EVFAC and check out the yarns we have for purchase!
Materials instructor will provide for class:
String heddle materials
Krokbragd pattern
Student handouts
Graph paper/colored pencils for pattern drafting
