In this introductory class, you'll craft your very own organic cotton summer scarf. No prior experience necessary – this class is designed specifically for beginners. Choose your own colors and design before learning how to set up your rigid heddle loom. By the afternoon, you'll be experiencing the meditative and joyful act of weaving. You'll acquire essential skills, including: - Weaving on a small, portable rigid heddle loom - Setting up a simple direct warp - Finishing techniques, including fringe techniques - Learning how to care for your handwoven items - Calculating yarn requirements for future projects.

Whether you're curious about weaving or seeking a fun craft, this class is perfect for you. Join us for a day of creativity and skill-building, and leave with a beautiful scarf ready to wear or share!

Class Agenda: 1 day, 6 hours
10:30- 11: Intro, overview, project design
11-Noon: Warping
Noon - 12:30: Lunch
12:30 - 4: Weaving with optional yarn calculation lecture
4 - 4:30: Finishing methods and group photos

Materials students should provide:

  • Please bring your assembled rigid heddle loom, included accessories, and a 7.5 or 8 dent heddle. Limited looms provided upon request. 

  • Notebook, scissors, a packed lunch, and a fun attitude!

The center has Rigid Heddle looms available for sale, and 2 looms available to borrow DURING this class. These looms can not be checked out or brought home. It is recommended that you own your own rigid heddle loom. Please contact Amanda to reserve one of the two looms for the class if that is the option you are selecting. This will be a first come first serve basis: education@evfac.org

About Sedona Rigsby: Sedona Rigsby is a designer and craftswoman who views creativity as a process of discovery and love. She weaves in her Santa Fe studio and travels to find special yarn made from sacred fibers. Beyond creation, she sees weaving as a link to ancestral wisdom and a form of meditation. Her passion lies in making garments and elevated wearables from handwoven textiles. In addition to her weaving practice, Sedona writes weaving patterns for rigid heddle looms. She is well-versed in various looms, including rigid heddle, multishaft, and countermarch, appreciating the strengths of each. Sedona's journey as a weaver began with exploration and travel. Her weaving adventures have taken her to place such as Guatemala, Mexico, Japan and the Marshfield School of Weaving. Follow her creative journey on Instagram @s.rigs.
