This is a class for Intermediate weavers. You must know how to warp and thread a loom, but you will have instructor assistance throughout the class.

Learn to double the width of your loom this February with Karen Hampton!

Double weaving is a fun a exciting way to design on the loom. It lends itself to creating unique, one-of-a-kind artwork. This class will teach weavers how to weave a double-cloth at double it’s width.

In this four day workshop, Karen Hampton will be teaching you the ropes of double weave. This workshop will focus on the fascinating double width technique. You will learn the ABC's of double weave, double width.

Learning to double weave will allow you to make extra big, wide, cozy blankets, or any fabric that is twice the width as your loom would allow (at first glance!). With four shafts, you can learn to weave two layers at once, with a seam down the edge of the warp. With 8 shafts you can add a twill pattern to your double weave!

Materials are provided for this class. You will be learning to weave double weave with sample yarn, and creating a small 2 layer 8” to 12” piece. If you would like to create a larger piece, you may bring your own warp and weft yarn to the class. Please note: if you would like to make a larger piece, it will be more time consuming than the class hours, and you will have to come in during non-class hours to finish the piece.

About Karen Hampton: Karen Hampton, an American Craft Council Fellow, is a conceptually based fiber artist who addresses issues of colorism and kinship. Hampton is recognized as a figurative storyteller who weaves together textures and colors of the ancient world with that of an imagined future. Material and imagery are part of the methodology she uses to access her ancestral and personal heritage. Using her training in the fiber arts with her training in anthropology, she synthesizes the weaver's role with that of a griot, the storyteller. Hampton's art practice easily flows between fiber surfaces and materials to complete each story. Hampton is a trained weaver and dyer; she retired from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2023 and now teaches Beginning and Intermediate 4 and 8 harness weaving at EVFAC and out of her studio.
