This is a beginner class, but students must have previous needle art experience such as knitting, crocheting, etc.

This class will investigate the basics of nålbinding, an ancient looping technique that was used to create dense, warm, and durable apparel and accessories during the Viking era and earlier.  Socks, mittens, and caps were the most common nålbound items unearthed during excavations of Viking settlements.

Workshops are self-paced with individualized instruction following group orientation to the technique. Material covered will include a brief history; yarn and needle choices; yarn joining; starting and ending; step-by-step guided instructions for mastering the two most common stitches, and more as time allows. In addition, students will learn how to connect stitches into a continuous tubular shape, the starting point for numerous common nålbound creations.

If you are looking for a new challenge and are passionate about preserving and nurturing ancient fiber art techniques, nålbinding may open a whole new world of creativity for you. Skäl!
